Our Story
Good Gardens, founded by Karen Hughan and drawing on over 45 years of design experience, creates thoughtful, art-driven landscapes throughout Fairfield County, Connecticut. From concept through construction, we design gardens that balance beauty, function, and horticultural expertise—spaces that grow with you and bring daily joy. Whether crafting full property plans, outdoor living areas, or specialty gardens, we approach every project with passion, care, and a deep respect for the landscape’s existing character and its ultimate potential.
“Let no one think that real gardening is a bucolic and meditative occupation. It is an insatiable passion, like everything else
to which a man gives his heart.”
Our Approach
Good Gardens offers a complete, thoughtful design process, from conceptual sketches to detailed specifications, contractor team assembly, bid documents, schematics, and project management. We also provide horticultural consultations to ensure long-term success after installation.
Understanding a client’s desires and uncovering their true needs is central to every garden plan. We believe that successful landscapes balance art and science, structure and spontaneity, nature and human nature. The most rewarding projects are built collaboratively, with clients, craftspeople, and the land itself.
“Gardens are an ever-changing adventure, never truly finished and forever evolving. The joy is in the process. May you find peace and even a little bit of magic in your own backyard.”
